
‘Oh Bury Me Not on the Lone Prairie’ is one of the most famous cowboy songs. Originating in the 19th century as a sea song, the cowboy version was first published in 1910 in John Lomax’s ‘Cowboy Songs and Other Frontier Ballads.’ It has been recorded by a number of artists, including Carl T. Sprague, Johnny Cash, Burl Ives, Bruce Molsky, Tex Ritter, The Residents and Johnnie Ray, as well as being used in film, television and in video games.
